Berkay Besler is one of only a few car racers from Turkey. But that doesn't stop the 23-year-old from setting ambitious goals and having already achieved some good results - among others in the Prototype Cup Germany, where he won three of the four rounds completed so far together with Marvin Dienst.
Besler came into contact with motorsport at an early age, starting his career in karting at just four and a half. But due to the lack of competition in Turkey, the son of the former Turkish rally champion Mehmet Besler was often drawn to other European countries during his karting days. Not only did he collect five Turkish championship titles, but he also won a title in Belgium.
When the next step was due in 2017, the necessary budget for formula racing was lacking. "So we looked for a cheap alternative and ended up with the Renault Clio Cup Italia." One season later, together with his current team Toksport WRT, he faced competition in the Porsche Sports Cup Deutschland, among others. In the Porsche Super Sports Cup classification, he shone in the final standings with second place and thus attracted attention in the Porsche scene. After a stopover in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East 2018/19, in which he finished second in the final standings with three wins in the last four races of the season, he moved up to the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. And there, the talent already celebrated his first podium visit at the season opener in Hockenheim with third place. More top ten finishes followed, but also some problems. "Especially in the second half of the season we had some problems with the car, which was replaced after an accident. Overall, things just didn't run smoothly anymore."
After a Corona year in 2020 with few entries, he reoriented himself towards GT4 and joined the Turkish team Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport. He still takes the wheel for this squad today. "It's nice to drive for a team from your home country, especially as they work really hard to succeed." At the end of 2021, he teamed up with Toksport WRT again and finished third in the Silver Cup at the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup powered by AWS in Barcelona. "Without a puncture, much more would have been possible," Besler was not too happy about the podium finish in his only GT3 race of the year. He had to cancel his planned participation in the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race at short notice after qualifying - a positive Corona test forced him to do so.
In the current season, in addition to his entry in the GT4 European Series, he has also enrolled in the Prototype Cup Germany. "The switch from prototype to GT4 is easier for me than the other way round, because I know the GT4 car very well by now. From GT4 to prototype is still a bit more difficult for me, but the more I do it, the easier it gets. I also like the handling of the prototypes; I think it suits my driving style very well."
What also fits perfectly from Besler's point of view is his team Toksport WRT and his teammate Marvin Dienst. "I've known Toksport WRT for a long time and enjoy a lot of support from them. Even if they don't explicitly say it, I feel that support, which is a great feeling. And Marvin is a damn fast racer with a lot of experience who supports me and gives me tips when needed. I'm very happy with this constellation in the Prototype Cup Germany." And because everything is almost perfect, Besler's goals are also high: "I want to become champion in the Prototype Cup Germany together with Marvin and also win the Junior classification. For me, both titles are important and I think we have a good chance. Since we are currently leading the drivers' standings, you could maybe even call us favourites, but I don't want to go that far out on a limb. You never know what will happen in the second half of the season. However, I can promise that we will give everything to achieve our goals."
